Lucky Things Wellbeing: Why I love the seven steps in Hindu wedding vows

Yesterday we celebrated the news of somebody’s engagement. It’s such an exciting time as you start to plan the rest of your life with someone who you really rate. Oh and you start to plan one of your best parties ever! Hearing us all share numerous wedding tips, it reminded me of our own wedding day(s). We were very lucky to have two weddings; the civil ceremony and the Hindu ceremony.

I grew up watching my cousins in Mauritius get married in their parents’ gardens. They looked like golden princesses. So that became a little dream for me and it was cool it came true. We decided to have a small Hindu ceremony in my Mum’s garden where we squeezed in a marquee (note: 60 people is really small for a Hindu wedding). Ok, it wasn’t in Mauritius but the weather North of London that day was incredible. Continue reading

Lucky Things Style: Gingham love

Gingham is back! Hopefully it isn’t just around for Summer. This week on Instagram someone tried on a nice midi gingham skirt from Zara. It reminded me how much I loved gingham as a teenager. I used to sport the country western look with a red gingham shirt and blue jeans. It was the time when we started getting into secondhand clothes. We didn’t realise how vintage would become so cool, we were just on a budget! Another favourite of mine was a small checked black and white gingham shirt. It was a bloke’s size small so just right for me. Shame I didn’t hold onto that one now. It also reminds me of school days wearing our red Summer school uniform dresses. Luckily there are some nice options out there for us grown-up girls. I definitely prefer black and white gingham, maybe it’s the monochrome love that influences me.

If you’ve seen my recent post on sale shopping I talk about adding “wearability” to your wardrobe. It’s about spending money on things that will have staying power through trends. So on my gingham search,  I’ve come across some pieces which are pretty wearable. Continue reading

Lucky Things Career: 7 top tips for networking

Networking can be fun as you get to meet new people or it can really make your stomach churn. We all need to network, not just in the work space but also in other social settings. It could be a friend’s wedding or a new baby group. Throughout my career whether in the media or corporate worlds, networking has played an important part in my different roles. Being on maternity leave and moving to new areas has also forced me to brush up on my networking skills. It isn’t just about networking at big events but also about how you make contacts and build links with peeps on a everyday basis. In June, I set myself a challenge of going to a bloggers’ conference Friday night drinks on my own, not knowing anyone (yikes). Here are 7 top tips I thought about before my networking adventure… Continue reading

Lucky Things Beauty: 7 things we love about lipstick

Yesterday in the office we had a beauty chat break (whilst working of course). We paused in our working day to appreciate the big L….lipstick. I always remember my mum trying to encourage me to wear lipstick from what I thought was an early age. Maybe I was 12 or 13. That was young to be wearing make up in my day. I kept refusing or maybe I was just rebelling. I used to say “No Mum I don’t need to wear lipstick, I have my lip balm”. Me and my school crew were well into lip balm at the time. The Body Shop had opened in our town and it was our make up Mecca!

Six years later and I’m in London at uni. I start getting involved in the fashion industry and I first come across MAC. It was another world. Me and my colleagues were given MAC discount cards. Amazing as it made quality make up affordable for us girls at the start of our London careers. So I guess I will always be loyal to MAC, plus I would always find make up for my shade of Mauritian skin. It ended up being their recycling programme that encouraged me to start using lipstick a bit more in my mid-20s. To this day, you can take back six old MAC containers and pick up a free lipstick. Magic! I did this the other day and it was a cool me-treat. Make up is definitely one of my lucky things. Continue reading

Lucky Things Style: My #BML16 Style Round-Up

Most days I can be a little indecisive what to wear. For my first #BML16 bloggers conference, I shortlisted 4 outfits. With only a few days to go, as well as packing for a family week away, I had to seriously sort out what I was wearing. At least I knew what shoes I’d be wearing to #BML16 – flat ones! So I called upon my trusty blog followers AKA the Lucky Things crew. To give people something fun to vote for last week, they chose from the below.

The winner of my style election was the yellow skirt I picked up from the bright Australian brand Gorman. I knew I wouldn’t regret buying that skirt. It felt a bit bold at the time but I thought it’s ok I  think I can make this work, plus it felt like a happy skirt to wear. I tried it on in a rush whilst Mr.H was manning the buggy and toddler in the Melbourne heat. I remember yelling to him from the across the street asking for his opinion!

Last Saturday, it was a jam-packed hot day and we were all busy running from session to session. It was also fun writing my celebrating my first #BML16 blog post. Everyone looked great at #BML16. So here’s my #BML16 style wrap up featuring some of the style spots I came across whilst chatting to bloggers over the weekend… Continue reading

Lucky Things Wellbeing: What not to say to someone who’s going through IVF…

Hello there. If you’ve had a mooch around Lucky Things blog, you’ll know that we went through IVF to get Big Munch and Baby Munch. As a kid I really didn’t enjoy science that much but little did I know it would help our dream to come true one day. It was funny as it was one of my close school mates Mummy HK (who’s also a space scientist) who told me “It will be ok, it’s physics, because of your operation things just need some help to get to the right places and you can get that help”. In one sentence she changed my view of IVF. It wasn’t something you did to confirm you couldn’t have children. IVF was about giving it a go with the hope that it could actually work despite the odds. So my friend said the right thing at the right time and in the right way. I was lucky to have some very very supportive friends who joined us on my first secret IVF journey. Continue reading

Lucky Things Fun: Partying with lots of Takayo style

Takayo hen partyHello Lucky Things crew. So here’s something fun, for the ladies and the little people. I first heard about Takayo (the person) through a good friend years ago. My friend told me about her mummy friend who organised Japanese kimono-themed parties. What a beautiful idea. Time has flown by and I’m so happy I’m able to feature Takayo, her work and her story on Lucky Things. I love what Takayo has to say about making progress… Continue reading

Lucky Things Wellbeing: 7 things that may help with the baby blues…

I’ve been pretty open about my baby blues experience last Summer. If you’d like to read the post about the baby blues and me, click here. It was easy for me to jot down 7 things that might help with the baby blues. This list doesn’t offer magic answers but hopefully offers a little support or comfort.  This topic is an important one to me (and maybe others too). In case you know of anyone who’s working through the baby blues, read on for 7 things to think about: Continue reading

Lucky Things London: The Haberdashery, Crouch End

Hello, how are you doing? What a great sunny day to catch up with an old friend over brunch. We managed to enjoy our meet up before the monsoon appeared! This morning we were on the lookout for somewhere to eat (carbs, protein and avocado please) and somewhere we could enjoy the summery breeze. Being inside wasn’t going to cut it. After thinking of two places we then headed to my friend’s first recommendation The Haberdashery.  This cool cafe is based on Middle Lane in Crouch End. There are so many places to eat Crouch End way but this place is now appearing in my top five. Continue reading
