A quick welcome to Lucky Things’ Time to Shine…

Before you read this post, I just wanted to add a very warm and hi-five welcome to my first guest writer for the new Lucky Things series. Basically,  Time to Shine lets peeps (I know and don’t know) “borrow my blog”. The main reason for hosting this is because everyone needs their time to shine, be creative, write some nice stuff and not everyone wants their own blog! Plus it’s great learning about others’ real-life experiences.

I couldn’t have got through motherhood without my original NCT crew; Kimberly and our other sidekick Sophie. The other day I visited Kimberly who no longer lives around the corner. We chatted about maternity leave, confidence dips, being good at stuff and opportunities to be creative. So I suggested that Kimberly could write her own post on all of these things for Lucky Things. I’m so glad she said yes! So, here’s seven top tips on confidence from a TV production manager / talent spotter and busy mummy Kimberly.

Confidence tips from a career in TV…

In this narrow window of opportunity for me before three-year old M wants to watch more Paw Patrol and Little Baby P might need a nappy change, I’m very excited to be writing a blog post for super cool mummy blogger and friend Sunita of Lucky Things.

When I’m not looking after little people, I work in TV production – one where, you’d assume, everyone needs to be incredibly confident. But confidence comes in many guises – so here are my top seven tips to being, or at least coming across as, confident:

  1. Be the most comfortable version of you…How can you possibly be confident when you’re pretending to be someone else? Let’s face it, not many of us are great actors. Whether it’s personally, socially or professionally, it’s far better to make mistakes, make conversation or make things happen when you’re the most comfortable version of you.
  2.  Being confident doesn’t mean being the centre of attention…This is an assumption many of us make, but I think it just means knowing what you’re good at and doing something good with it. You don’t have to be the popular one in the middle of the room cracking jokes and telling stories – channel your energies into being quietly confident in your own unique skills.
  3. Say yes… It’s liberating. Really! Say yes to a party where you won’t know many people. Say yes to taking on something you’ve never done before at work (within reason!) Say yes to hosting toddler tea for a bunch of local mums. What’s the worst that can happen? You might discover a new skill, contact or a friend.
  4. Ask for help and advice… I come across a lot of people in my job who try to blag their way through their career (and life, possibly) and it’s one of my pet hates. Everyone values honesty – it’s a far more attractive quality than arrogance. And it’s really endearing when someone, however junior or senior says “Actually, I’ve never been shown how to do that properly. Do you have time to teach me?” or “I’m debating how to tackle this problem/person/situation, do you mind if I talk it through with you for your opinion?” I strongly believe it shows strength and maturity to ask for help in an intelligent way. And at least you won’t spend most of your time maintaining a façade and panicking you’re going to mess up!
  5. Be decisive… This is a tricky one, but making decisions and sticking with them will empower you. In the words of Nike – who I’m not sponsored by… open to offers though Nike – ‘Just do it!’ The more time you spend thinking of other ways you could tackle something, or dithering over your options, the more you’ll worry and grow the task to over-gigantic proportions in your head. And set yourself up for a fall. Just crack on and do the best you can. You can always tweak things along the way.
  6. Do your research…Find out a bit about the person you’re going to meet. Research the company online or ask that friend of a friend for some insider info on it. Whether it’s an interview or a social, if you’re armed with interesting info you’ll have plenty to talk about with confidence.
  7. Wear something that makes you feel good…One I know Sunita from Lucky Things will agree with – if you’re going somewhere daunting.There’s nothing like your favourite top, jeans or dress to make you come across as confident to others (and you’ll get compliments, which always help!). Also, you can be shaking like a leaf inside but no one will know if you’re wearing something flattering that brings the best of your personality out. Any excuse for a shopping trip too. You’re welcome.

Right. Off to make a cuppa in celebration of writing my first blog post (top tip number 3 – just say yes). But not before a complete outfit change for Little Baby P by the smell of things!

    I have recently been involved in some news items, one for local news and the other for Channel 4’s No Go Britain and am filled with awe at the work which goes into filming.

    Nice to read this. Great idea to let someone else use your blog too.

    I love these clips! I am really unconfident and always tell myself that it’s about being comfortable! I always say yes and I agree clothes are really important and they can really help us with our confidence! #KCACOLS

    This is fab! Totally agree with these tips. I feel like since having implemented a lot of those tips-I’ve definitely seen a lot more doors open (and made friends in the process too!). I’d so love to do some TV work or find out about all the work that goes on backstage, must be so fascinating (and very different from my day job!) #KCACOLS

    Some really good tips here! I feel like my confidence levels rise and dip like a rollercoaster – Some days i feel great and other days I feel like a total failure and dont want to go anywhere or see anyone. I need to work on saying YES more, but i think i worry about planning things and then having a confidence crisis on the day. I always feel better when ive made an effort with my appearance, although its not a easy to find the time with a toddler about! Thanks so much for linking up at #KCACOLS.     Lovely idea for a post – I think everyone struggles with confidence sometimes (don’t they?!) and I love these tips. Think about all of those times we encourage other people or little ones to do exciting or lovely things to stretch themselves. Well sometimes it’s our turn to give things a go. I always feel I am under-confident so it’s handy to think of things to help with that…I used to work in TV production as well and have to say that having to be adaptable to new teams quite often makes you fake a bit of confidence here and there 🙂 Thanks for linking up to #dreamteam xx
