Lucky Things Food: Review of Whyte & Brown, Kingly Court, London WC1

Whyte & Brown is based in the gorgeous secluded Kingly Court behind Liberty’s at Oxford Circus. The last time I went to Whyte & Brown was for a late night supper with a friend. We met earlier on for dinner but were distracted mooching around Topshop around the corner! We ended up eating at 10pm on a Friday night (that’s rock and roll in my world!). Last time I had the buttermilk chicken burger and it was pretty good.

It was lovely heading back to Whyte & Brown for lunch this week. I went with one of my girlfriends. We needed a proper catch up before she headed back to her new teaching job next week. Here’s 7 things we loved about Whyte & Brown:

1.It’s the only branch in the whole world…I love eating at Whyte & Brown as it’s an independent restaurant. One of the team, Sandra, explained the benefits of being a chain-free restaurant. They get to change the menu as much as they need to. It usually changes every six months in line with the seasons. Its nice know a restaurant like this has creative cuisine control! We turned up just before midday so quite a few diners were finishing off their brunch. It was good to known this place is also a hot spot for some brunch. Check out the video of the Whyte & Brown team on their website, they rock. The service was really good despite the restaurant being busy at lunchtime.

2. Al fresco dining...I was planning to eat inside but I didn’t realise they have a fab outside area in Kingly Court. It was perfect as we were approaching the end of August and we felt the need to make the most of any outdoor opportunities.

3. Chicken-happy!…This place is great for chicken lovers. It’s their speciality. It’s not like other chicken restaurants where it’s just about adding a different sauce. It’s all about decent chicken meals. All of their chicken is free range from the Soanes family in Yorkshire (known as the freshest and tastiest grain-fed, air-chilled chicken in the UK). There are also lots of  non-chicken options on the menu. I had the grilled chicken paillard with red and yellow tomatoes. My friend went for the chicken souvlaki, black olive tapenade,  greek style salad, feta, tzatziki and pitta! We loved the sound of the quinoa, black kaniwa, pomegranate and mango salad. We made some great choices, they were all super delicious.

4. Truffle oil Parmesan fries…Indre at Whyte and Brown recommended we try these fries. They sound pretty classy right? We were trying to be carb free but easily gave in to Indre’s suggestion as its always fun trying something different. Well, they tasted incredible and so deserve two photos on this post. Hmm maybe one day I should set up a blog about chips!

5. Grilled food…they must have a serious badass grill in their kitchen. It’s a great way to cook food and much healthier than being fried. We were both surprised how well our chicken was seasoned and cooked without it being dry (seasoning is also a big thing for me!). I rounded off my meal with a very unnecessary brownie and corn flake ice cream. The ice cream really did taste of corn flakes, it was great.

6. The Whyte & Brown buzz… We booked a table for 12pm and the tables around us and inside soon filled up. It’s obviously a popular place for local workers, tourists and Oxford Circus shoppers!  They also do a £10 set menu where you can choose two courses. Whyte & Brown also passed my friends and family test. I knew I could easily come here with my mates but could I come here with the family, an energetic three-year old, ready to walk one-year old and a buggy in tow?  Yep. In fact they have a ground floor and a first floor. There are some great booths on the first floor for seating families and little ones. The W&B team seemed really nice so I’m sure they’d help you up the stairs with the buggy. I also thought this would be a great place to meet up for pre-shopping breakfast with the baby in the buggy. It’s also a cool place for a me-treat, a ladies lunch or meeting up with your other pals on maternity leave. Ah I miss those maternity leave retail-browsing days pushing the babies in the buggy around Carnaby Street and Oxford Street.

7. Great decor… we loved the prints and cushions. You’ll end up picking up lots of ideas for your own home!  It certainly has a homely feel; nice and relaxed. It’s lovely that they can open all of the doors out onto the balcony on the first floor. The art prints on the walls are amazing. I know Big Munch would have loved spotting the animals. You can see more of their colourful prints on the Whyte and Brown website.  Just like the name of my favourite birdy print up in the restaurant,  “I like you” Whyte & Brown.
