Why I’ll be at #BloggersBeatingCancer on Friday 30 September

The big C. I find it hard to believe that no one has been touched by cancer. Whether one of your relatives, friends or colleagues (or you) have suffered from cancer, everyone seems to have their own experience of this heartbreaking condition.I remember when Mr. H told me that my mom-in-law had breast cancer a few years ago.

It terrified me. He had already lost his father to cancer when he was about 8 years old. What does this mean? Is she going to be OK? How is your Sister feeling about this? Is Mom in pain? What can they do to help her? Are we going to be able to have kids in time so Mom can enjoy being a grandma? At that moment, all of those questions ran through my head and my heart.

My Mom-in-law is a real fighter, in many ways. She made it through numerous rounds of chemotherapy. Her annual check-ups have come out fine. We are very grateful she is still with us –  busy looking after Baby Munch and Big Munch, giving me advice on practical parenting stuff as well as sharing really cool tips about tumble-drying clothes! My Mom-in-law is a big fan of building memories as a family. She was supportive of our once-in-a-lifetime trip to Melbourne and South Asia with the girls in January. She even decided to join us.

Amongst all of the good memories we still enjoy together, I never forget her experience of cancer and how terrifying the annual check-ups must feel. Over the years, close friends’ parents and one of my dearest uncles suffered from cancer. Some made it through the treatment. In October 2012, Mr.H, my big Brother and I DJed at an event to raise money for the Teenage Cancer Trust. It was a big wake up call. My main experiences of knowing people with cancer were of an older age. We were reminded that cancer doesn’t discriminate and sadly touches people of all ages.

So, about 10.30am on Friday 30 September 2016 (if I’m on time), I’ll be online to join #BloggersBeatCancer for some virtual cake and tea to raise some money and spread the word. #BloggersBeatCancer has been arranged by two of the lovely bloggers, Emma from Island Living 365 and Sarah from Mumzilla who I both met at BritMums’ #BML16 conference back in June. You don’t have to be a blogger to join us.

Here’s what Sarah says about the virtual coffee morning…

“We bloggers, as a collective, we could really shout. How many people could we each get to donate say £5 to charity? To Bart’s Charity and to MacMillan, for both cure and care? So we have set a date for bloggers, and the people who read our ramblings, to have a virtual coffee morning. To spend 10, 15, 30 minutes, whatever we can spare, to sit and have a drink, and to talk to our friends, either in person or online. To ask people to donate to these amazing causes, that could change lives, that could save lives.”

Maybe see you there. x Sunita
