Seven things I learnt from the first Lucky Things Meet Up of 2017

Hey everyone, well January is nearly over. 2017 is a big year for me for a number of reasons. Saturday 28 January was a fab highlight for me; getting everyone together at the first #LuckyThingsMeetUp of 2017. This time, the Lucky Things Meet Up took place at The Folly in the City of London. About fifty people came along (it was a sell-out which was amazing). We had a great afternoon and so here’s a quick round up of my personal highlights and what I learnt on Saturday…

  1. Focus on intentions rather than goalsDr Tamara Russell spoke about mindfulness and some everyday tricks. As she jokes, mindfulness is not about going off and sitting on a mountain. Tamara talked about how intentions are much nicer to think about instead of goals.  A blog post breaking this down will appear soon. It really made me think. Tamara made mindfulness manageable. It felt like a lot of the crowd also took on board her ideas too and I know some didn’t know much about mindfulness so they were curious about it all. Tamara rocked the house with her mindfulness expertise. Check out this lovely blog post on what Claire from The Pramshed took away from the talk. IMG_3910.JPG
  2. People love catching up in real life…It’s hard to catch up with friends and online colleagues in person. Everyone is so busy. But when we’re in the same space it’s quite inspiring and there’s bound to be lots of laughs. We rounded the night off with a few laughs including me nearly getting stuck in the tube ticket gate barrier as I forgot I was carrying a huge IKEA bag full of event stuff!img_3833-1
  3. It doesn’t matter if you don’t know anyone…I loved that lots of people came down on their own. Some didn’t know anyone who would be there. It’s the kind of thing I’d happily do but with natural apprehension about whether people will speak to me or will I spot a friendly face to chat to? I know a lot of people can feel quite anxious about going to big events even when they know people there; it’s totally normal to feel like that. By the end of the evening, people were leaving with new connections and swapped business cards.
  4. Everyone has a story…During the talk we chatted about looking after ourselves and which activities nurture us and which drain us. Two  stories from the guests particularly touched us all (thanks Sonoko and Liese). You don’t have to live someone else’s life but you can still feel heaps of compassion and respect for someone. You don’t even need to know them that well. I strongly believe no one’s life is straightforward, as there are always bumps, big or small.
  5. Difference is good…This was mentioned on one of my Instagram posts on the morning of the event. It’s great getting a group of people together who have different stories, values, experiences, careers, styles and live in different places around the UK. I will always celebrate difference.
  6. Hand massages are the way to go…This time I made sure I had a hand massage by Weleda’s beauty adviser Siobhan. She’s a wise soul and full of good advice. Her energy is fab. She even gave me some advice before my recent trip away from the kids. The tension in my arms was unbelievable. I joked that there was probably a year’s worth of stress stored up in them. In five minutes that was zapped away. Tamara also mentioned how doing hand massages on yourself is a quick way to de-stress with a bit of hand cream. I’ll be sharing the seven tricks on looking after yourself from my talk on the blog soon.
  7. Words and feedback are important to me…I love knowing what people think. I’m definitely value words more than numbers of followers etc.  Appreciate everyone’s different though. Lots of inspiring guests chatted to me throughout the afternoon and shared their honest feedback. I could see they were being genuine. I’m very lucky that just like the last Lucky Things Meet Up, we spent the afternoon with a lovely crowd. After all, it’s the crowd that makes the Lucky Things Meet Ups. Their energy and support is something I’m pretty grateful for.

Oh Sunita it was such a great day – really enjoyed it and felt I got so much out of it – I’ve been using the mindfulness technique of focusing on my feet on the ground and taking a breather – really has helped me in several situations since the event. Was also just great to meet people I’d met before and new people also – made some great new friends so thank you so much for organising lovely and am really looking forward to the next one xx #fortheloveofBLOG
