Lucky Things Out and About: Off to the Museum of Childhood…

Museum of Childhood – fun for grown-ups too!

Well Big Munch is now 3 so for I promised to have a mummy day with her to celebrate her birthday the other month. It was an exciting day out as she got to take mummy’s choo-choo train into work so she could first check out my desk and say a little hello to my workmates. We then headed to the beautiful Museum of Childhood in Bethnal Green for the rest of the day. I’d been meaning to take her for ages and secretly knew I’d really love it too. It’s just one tube stop from Liverpool Street station but we jumped on the bus so we could tick another mode of transport off our list.

Arriving on a Friday morning was pretty chilled. There were a few school outings but still plenty of space and enough time at each activity spot. It’s the perfect place to mooch about with little ones and grown-ups. As you can imagine, lots of things to do and play with. My friend Mummy C reminded me about the Bagpuss exhibition and I also wanted to check out the On Their Own photographic stories of immigrant children in London.

So here’s our 7 lucky things we enjoyed about our trip to The Museum of Childhood…

  1. I love anything V&A. Their museums are magical. The Museum of Childhood is a great size; not too small and not too big. There are two main floors and so it’s fun exploring the different toys on show from all of the centuries.
  2. Walking down memory lane…Of course it brought back memories for me and Big Munch loved browsing the retro toy artefacts from around the world. We both loved the Japanese dolls house.
  3. Lots of cute things…I found the ultimate record decks for us grown-up vinyl lovers. Just wish they still sold these Fisher Price record players.
  4. Lots of stuff to do. Sticking to the music theme, I loved the sensory disco lights area. Shame I was a bit too big to hang out in there and drop a few moves.  Upstairs there was the games section with good old snakes and ladders. Oh and not forgetting the sand pit which was busy with babes as well as toddlers.
  5. Everyone is creative…Loved seeing these words up on the wall. Some grown-up inspiration for all of us (and my Lucky Things blog too). It’s so important to remember how playing can build up little people’s confidence.
  6. Time to eat…The cafe is huge with loads of nice tables and more than enough highchairs. It’s a Benugo franchise so the menu is pretty good. Oh and they also do ice cream.
  7. Cute things to buy...The museum shop is by the entrance so you can’t miss it. Lots of bold colours ranging from design-loving children’s books, unique toys and one of our favourite gifts for others; socks. We picked up a couple of these for their cousins’ party bags. Big Munch even spotted a red dragon from Room On The Broom.

So if you’re in or around London town, I hope you get to check it out one day on your own, with grown-up friends or little ones…

Lucky Big Munch to have such a wonderful mother who takes her to such wonderful places. I’ve been meaning to go to the Brand Museum (http://www.museumofbrands.com) for years now and that’s only round the corner.
You put me to shame with all your exploring, I must be do better 😉
