Lucky Things Music: 7 reasons why music is good for your wellbeing

Hey everyone. How’s your week going? When was the last time you heard some music?  I can’t imagine everyday life without music. Here’s 7 reasons why music is good for your wellbeing…

1. We all have favourite tunes...I love it how my taste in music is a real mix. During phases in my life I definitely had favourite artists. When I was about 12/13 I remember listening to my Elvis Presley LP over and over. This wasn’t even a hand me down from my parents. I used my pocket money to buy it from our local Woolworths. Oh then Bros arrived.

Maybe as a tactic to wean me off Bros, my big brother introduced me to Prince. This changed my world. We would go to his concerts together, I’d gradually build up my CD collection of his albums and I’d watch his films.  I’d even dress like his backing singers.  Still can’t believe he’s not with us. It was so nice dancing to his tunes at FUN DMC the other month.

My big brother was a big influence on my musical tastes. I grew up in a town outside of London in the BritPop era. It would have been easy to become a 100% Indie kid (one of my favourite tracks is still Fools’ Gold by Stone Roses). My brother started to send me his DJ mix tapes (yes cassettes) as he was at Uni in London. They featured disco, RnB, soul and hip hop.

I then started watching MTV. I’d rush home from Saturday night pub outings with my mates so I could watch my favourite show MTV Raps. It was No longer just about Top of the Pops.

2. Music brings back memories of people…Sadly Mr H’s dad passed away during his childhood. Whenever Mr H hears certain tunes I know it brings back precious memories of the time he did have with his dad. I know certain tunes remind me of people in my life who I don’t get to see much like my big cousin who lives in Melbourne.

3. It takes us back to our childhood…Do you remember any tunes from your childhood? From an early age, music is a positive influence. It’s not just about nursery tunes but maybe the songs we remember being played in the car on family road trips. I always remember my parents playing When will I see you again by The Three Degrees. We still have their 7″ single of Bob Marley’s  Could you be loved.

4. It helps us to chill out…You don’t have to listen to classical or jazz to feel relaxed when listening to music. It can be any type of music that makes you feel better. Music cheers us up and can even put us in a good mood.

I know it helps me when I’m on a packed train to work. My favourite artist for commuting is D’Angelo at the moment. As you may have seen from my other post on making the most of your commute to work, I rarely leave the house without my headphones.

Mr H used to play The Carpenters’ Close to you to settle Big Munch to sleep when she was a baby. These days, pop Let it go on and we can guarantee it will change Big Munch’s mood if she’s a bit tired or grouchy.

5. It helps us to focus…If you studied for anything did you ever play music whilst you were writing or typing those essays? I know some people need silence to concentrate. I love having music on in the background when I’m at home especially if I’m cleaning. If the room is quiet it doesn’t feel right.

6. Lyrics!…Some tunes have beautiful lyrics or say something that really means something to me. I heard Clean Bandit and Jess Glyne’s tune Rather Be nearly everyday on the radio during maternity leave with Big Munch. It became one of our maternity leave anthems as the lyrics were “There’s no place I’d rather be..”

7. It’s fun!...Whether we’re going out dancing with our mates, seeing one of our favourite DJs or bands play or singing along to children’s tunes to get them jumping around, you can always have a good time when music is on.
What do you love about music? When do you like listening to music? What tunes remind you of your favourite people? Share the music love and leave a comment below….

x Sunita

P.S. Shout out to my big bro V for sharing his music with me, teaching me how to DJ, taking me clubbing and to many Prince gigs in London. He probably taught me how to dance too.

I could not agree more with this. If I had to give up music or tv, it would be tv. I don’t listen to music as much as I used to now but it does all the things you said. I listened to music constantly at university; Like you I HAD to have something on in the background. Sometimes, if I am on my own, I will leave some calming tunes playing (on sleep mode) whilst I fall asleep. “Sugar” by Maroon 5 and “King” by Years & Years remind me of Mat Leave. “Can’t Stop the Feeling” by Justin T will remind me of my daughter’s toddler years! #fortheloveofBLOG

Same here. I could never give up music. I rarely watch TV these days so don’t think I’m missing much. Lovely to hear the calming tunes you guys like to play. I’ll have to check those out #fortheloveofBLOG

Oh I so agree! Music has been a major part of my life. My parents met through music – my dad was in a band and my mum was a dancer in his band so from there music has been a key part of my upbringing as the band would practise night after night in our house – I would fall asleep to lead guitar and vocals. I grew up to the sound of rock music but have a huge passion for classical. I’d find it hard to choose my favourite genre as both hold such a place in my heart! I agree about silence though – I have to have music on! #fortheloveofBLOG

Hey what a musical romance for your parents! Has your mum taught you some good dance moves? 😉 That’s cool you’ve grown up with such a big presence of music. Recently Mr H has got me into classical music. We even went to The Proms in the Summer and I loved it! We always have music or the radio on at breakfasts and dinner time with the kids. Although Big Munch often tells me off for dancing too much in the kitchen. Thanks for all of your lovely support Helen. Xx #fortheloveofBLOG

It’s funny how we might like different music now. Never thought I’d enjoy a bit of classical music! During my last maternity leave Baby Munch listened to Jazz FM lots as there was lots of chilled and happy tunes. Previous maternity leave it was all about Radio 1 Extra! #fortheloveofBLOG

Thanks Petra. That’s a great tip. Today I dropped off my daughters at nursery and they were playing classical music at breakfast time! I love it that they play classical music at Brixton tube station. It does chill everyone out. I’ll check out Ludovico and will tell Mr H too. He’s got me more into classical over the past year.
