So going back to work has encouraged me to use my time on the train to and from the office wisely. As a parent it’s precious me-time, even if it’s only half an hour. If I’m lucky I’ll get a seat. If I don’t, my music makes standing room only feel a bit better. Of course, for many the journey is a chance to read a good book or check work emails to get ready for the day ahead.
Here’s 7 other things you can do to make the most of your journey when you’re on the bus, tram, tube or train…
1. Take in your favourite podcasts. These can range from TV shows to Ted Talks. Don’t forget your headphones! My favourites are the AKG K451 headphones (found on Amazon). They’ve become pretty popular with commuters. Not too big and they fold up great for smaller handbags. Also if you like things a little louder the noise won’t annoy your fellow commuters. Or if passengers are chatting too loudly these headphones also give you some quiet time.
2. Lucky things are sometimes soon forgotten – Start a list on your phone capturing your 7 lucky things that you’ve come across that week or that month. I love looking back at my happy lists. Sometimes it includes funny one-liners from our 3 year-old, nice things people have said to me or cute things that have made me smile.
3. Write a nice email or message to someone who you know needs a little perk up. Sometimes we don’t tell each other enough how great someone is or how thankful we are for something they’ve done for us (even if it was ages ago). Go on, send an “I just wanted to say I think you’re pretty cool because….” or ” I really wanted you to know how much I appreciated it when you did…” message. It doesn’t take long and it can become the highlight of someone’s day.
4. Make some Headspace. The Headspace app is all about looking after ourselves and taking time out to rejuvenate our minds a little. There’s a free 10 day trial and then you can sign up for a year costing £4.99 a month. As my friend says that’s just two less cappuccinos or lattes a month right? A good investment for general wellness. You can do the Headspace 10 minute mind exercises whether you’re standing or sitting. Ideal modern meditation and easy mindfulness for the person on the go.
5. Keeping in touch time. Well the world of WhatsApp, Messenger and good old normal texts means we can chat to friends who we don’t see much. The other day me and my friends were giggling about the days when we didn’t have mobiles. Back in the day some people even had pagers but that was no way to have a proper chat! Or go old school and write a postcard or letter. We all know how little people love receiving their own post.
It’s also a chance to catch up on blogs and online articles. My favourite read is a morning dose of The Early Hour online magazine. A cool mix of interviews and generally interesting stuff. Check it out as articles come out 5am each day.
6. Fill up the kitchen cupboards. Do your online food shopping (or less practical shopping or online window browsing if you prefer!) With wifi available on the London Tube it now means we get to use our phones even more on our travels. Are there any other things on your to-do list that can be looked after whilst you’re on your way to work or on your way home?
7. Do nothing! Maybe this is your time to just sit or stand and clear your head a bit. I find this one hard to do as I like making the most of my me-time but if I’m really tired the headphones will be on so I can enjoy some tunes to kick off my day.
