Brunch Love: Jackson & Rye, Soho, London

Catch ups with friends are so important aren’t they? There are so many things I love about friendships. I wanted to go somewhere nice for brunch with the bestie in London town so we could have a really nice catch up. Ali and me get to see each other every couple of months. We consider ourselves to be old-fashioned friends as we still love our phone-calls. We speak every week, so time in-between meet ups doesn’t feel that long. Meeting in central London works for us as we both live at the opposite ends of London suburbs. Our little daughters were busy enjoying daddy-time last Saturday so we headed to Jackson & Rye in Soho for a well-overdue brunch. Here’s seven things we loved about our morning at Jackson & Rye…

1. Brunch atmosphere…I love going into Soho in the morning at weekends. There’s hardly anyone at Oxford Circus when you get off the tube about 10am. You can beat the crowds with a bit of store browsing pre-brunch. I knew Jackson & Rye gets booked up at the weekend but wondered if it would really be that busy. I was surprised when we turned up at Jackson & Rye on Wardour Street as it was already bustling with couples, friends and families for serious brekkie time. It was obviously a good spot for brunch.

2. Our favourite breakfast with an avocado twist…. After stalking other tables’ meal choices I decided to go with something I love. The table next door had the House Roasted Granola which looked pretty good but that would be just a starter for me! We both went for the Avocado Benedict. It was beautiful! There I was expecting a few slices of avocado to jazz up my poached eggs. It actually came with two halves of an avocado. To compliment the slice of bacon there was some sneaky sausage meat tucked away inside the avocado halves. This made it quite unique. The eggs were perfect and the little watercress salad worked a treat too. Portions were just right (and we don’t like going hungry!) Their menu is pretty broad for a brunch menu; featuring some Jackson & Rye classics like Truffled Mac and Cheese and Buttermilk Fried Chicken if you fancy some heavy brunching. I came here when I was pregnant with Baby Munch and enjoyed both for supper. If you’ve taken a look at the 20 facts about me, you know how much I love (quality) fried chicken!

3. Smoothie love…It was a hot morning so smoothies made sense. Ali went for the Green Juice (avocado, spinach, watercress, mint, cucumber, topped with chia seeds). I bet you could add some vodka or gin to this and it would have made a great cocktail. I went for the Carrot Sunrise (good old carrot, apple and ginger). The Bloody Mary selection looked pretty good too.

4. Weekend brunching until 4.30pm…The cool thing is that you can brunch nearly most of the day at the weekend. It makes it the perfect place to have an early or late lunch (handy for when you’re still eating out around baby or toddler’s lunchtime naps or when you need re-fuelling after some shopping).

5. Perfect for a nice catch up…As a working-mum, social time with my friends is precious. So when we catch up, we like to visit restaurants where there is great food and a great atmosphere. I’d been to the Jackson & Rye in Soho with different groups of friends for dinner last year. It’s a cool venue for catching up with mates. It’s a spacious restaurant so also perfect for family dining. Menu prices are reasonable and well worth it considering the quality of the food.We have never been disappointed with the food so it was cool testing out their brunch. The Jackson & Rye team were lovely and we didn’t have to wait long for our food considering how busy they were on a Saturday morning.

6. Sweet treats…Our waiter and menu master Enrico suggested we try some of the pancakes. Never one to say no to a pancake, we chose ones with the Blueberries, Mixed Berry Compote and Crème Fraiche. It obviously looked like a healthy choice and hey a nice dose of antioxidants after a Friday night hen do with work. The weekend brunch menu is full of other sweet treats like scones, potted vanilla cheesecake and pecan pie.

7. Plenty of space for everyone…Jackson & Rye is pretty spacious as it also has loads of tables downstairs (I had a sneaky peek when I popped to the bathroom – ooh they also have Aesop handwash). The ground floor is really spacious so there’s plenty of space for larger gatherings, buggies or shopping bags! They have some great booths and corner spaces for smaller groups. Jackson & Rye would also be a perfect meet up space for parents during the week. There’s an American vintage feel but it isn’t cheesy. I love the Art Deco style thanks to New York designers Roman + Williams. The bar is a central feature so it’s a nice place to hang out if you have to wait for a table or just want to catch up over cocktails.

So, if you’re looking for somewhere to enjoy brunch, lunch or dinner check out Jackson & Rye. I love the fact that Jackson & Rye isn’t a huge chain. Those based in South West London are lucky things as they have three branches to choose from…

Jackson & Rye can be found at:

  • 56 Wardour Street, London, W1D 4JG (Soho branch, a 10 minute walk from Oxford Circus or 5 minute walk from Leicester Square or Tottenham Court Road tube stations)
